HPPA-1007
Creative play for all ages featuring native Hawaiian species!
NĒNĒ
The nēnē (Branta sandvicensis) is the only Hawaiian goose and is found exclusively in Hawaiʻi. These waterfowl do much more walking than swimming, and their feet have lost webbing. Nēnē had no predators until humans settled in Hawaiʻi. The National Park Service actively protects nēnē, which mate for life.
HAPPY FACE SPIDER
This charismatic little (5mm) spider, Theridion grallator, is found on the undersides of leaves in the forests of Hawaiʻi. They do not build webs. The female guards her bright green patch of eggs until the spiderlings hatch. The Hawaiian name is nananana makakiʻi: face-patterned spider.
PUEO
Hawaiian Short-Eared Owl Pueo uses its fiery golden eyes to spot mice and rats running through meadows at dawn and dusk. They bring food to owlets hiding in the nest deep in the grass.
HPPA is proud to support conservation projects that protect and preserve iconic flagship species and their environments.
