About the Ulu Niu Print
Ulu Niu — I ka malu o ka lau niu • In the shade of the coconut leaves
For generations across Moananuiākea, the niu (coconut) has stood as the ultimate provider; nourishing, protecting, and sustaining life from birth through one’s final days. Every part of this sacred kinolau of Kū served a purpose: trunks shaped into pahu drums and canoes, fronds woven into baskets, hats, and shelter, shells transformed into tools and vessels, and its pure, untouched water used in ceremony. The niu traveled with our navigating ancestors on long ocean voyages, offering sustenance, materials, and the means to establish life in new lands.
Manaola’s Ulu Niu print pays tribute to this profound legacy. Layered frond structures create a backdrop representing malu niu, the comforting shade and protection of the coconut leaves, while the intricate foreground reflects the tree’s many utilitarian gifts. Wearing this print is a celebration of the niu’s enduring role as a guardian, provider, and symbol of resilience throughout the Pacific.
