Diamond Head Crater is an extinct, dormant volcano. It was given its name because Western explorers saw the "sparkles" on the crater and mistook the calcite crystals for diamonds. The first military reservation on the islands of Hawai'i was called Fort Ruger and was built inside the crater of Diamond Head.
