There are two varieties of naupaka. One grows near the sea and is called naupaka kahakai. The other, called naupaka kuahiwi, grows in the mountains. Each bears what appears to be only a half-blossom.
When placed together, they form a single flower. Several Hawaiian legends tell how the naupaka blossom came to have its distinctive “half-flower” shape—stories of love and longing—and these stories inspired this greeting card.
