Kala, or bluespine unicornfish is a well-known fish amongst Hawaiʻi divers. Kala are unmistakable due to their unique unicorn horn. They are also one of the only reef fish in Hawaiʻi that needs no scaling before it is eaten. Traditionally, their leathery skin which is similar to shark skin, was dried and stretched to make the top of a pahu drum. They can grow up to 2 ft and their diet consists of limu (algae).
