ʻElepaio or Hawaiian flycatcher, is the only successful bird in the vast flycatcher family to inhabit the Hawaiian Islands. They are mainly brown in color with whiteish bellies and often have their tail standing up at an angle. As their family name implies, they feed on many types of insects and can be found in numerous types of forests on Hawaiʻi, Kauaʻi, and very rarely on Oʻahu. They have even adapted to live in some non-native forests. In old Hawaiʻi, ʻelepaio were thought to be guardian spirits for canoe makers. If an ʻelepaio frequented a certain tree, it meant there were a lot of insects inside its wood, making it undesirable for canoes.
