Born in 2020 out of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to small businesses and vendors, the idea for the Pop-Up Mākeke emerged as a platform for small businesses to come together and thrive. Mākeke in the Native Hawaiian language means marketplace. Now nearly four years later, Pop-Up Mākeke has grown and expanded its reach far beyond Hawaiʻi, while still being true to our founding purpose.
What sets us apart from other retailers is that our store is owned and operated by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA), a 501(C)3 non-profit organization dedicated to supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs in Hawaiʻi. Profits from purchases at The Mākeke not only benefit the vendors, but generate funding for CNHA’s community programs across Hawaiʻi that foster the development of Native Hawaiians and Hawaiʻi as a whole.
In addition, our unwavering commitment to Hawaiʻi's small businesses and our careful curation of products that embody the spirit of the islands, our marketplace offers a diverse array of items, ranging from handcrafted crafts to delectable food products, all made with love by local artisans and entrepreneurs.
